Cultural Perspectives: Working with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Clients and Families in Health Settings
This six hour RACGP accredited cultural safety workshop provides a cultural perspective on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander clients, families and carers in general practice and community care.
Presented by
This course is hosted by Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative Ltd (DDACL) and presented by AJ Williams-Tchen of Girraway Ganyi Consultancy.
AJ is of Wiradjuri / Wotjobulak background and has over 25 years experience in health & community services and is the recipient of the 2016 Emerging Indigenous Leadership Award.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify barriers that affect contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients & Families
- Acknowledge the historical events that have impacted on health and social & emotional wellbeing
- Highlight strategies to introduce cultural safety within your practice & organisation
Accreditation
This course is accredited for 40 category 1 points is part of the RACGP QI&CPD Program for the 2017-19 triennium. Activity number 114354.
Cost
Free but registration is essential. Morning tea, a light lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.

This course takes participants on a journey through PowerPoint presentations, films, discussions and experiential learning opportunities.
Participants are asked to complete the following pre-program reading and activity:
- Article 1 (pre-reading) - Caring for country
- Article 2 (pre-reading) - Experience of providing cultural safety in mental
health to Aboriginal patients: A grounded theory
study - Article 3 (pre-reading) - The power of talk
- Pre-program activity (please complete and return as per instructions on the form)
Please note: GPs seeking Category 1 points MUST complete the pre-reading and pre-activities to be eligible for points.
