World Suicide Prevention Day - Changing the Narrative

September 9, 2025

Wednesday 10 September marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a global opportunity to reflect, raise awareness and strengthen our shared commitment to preventing suicide.

This year’s theme, ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide,’ invites us to transform how we think and talk about suicide. By shifting from silence and stigma to openness, empathy and action, we can help ensure those struggling feel heard, supported and connected.

At South Eastern Melbourne PHN we are dedicated to compassionately addressing suicide prevention. We work closely with local communities, healthcare providers and people with lived experience to design and commission programs that:

  • Prevent suicide
  • Support those who have attempted suicide
  • Provide care and understanding to families, friends and communities affected

Our most recent Health Needs Assessment highlights that suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 – 44. Each year, more the 3,000 Australians die by suicide, and over 55,000 make an attempt. These are not just numbers, they are families, friends, colleagues and communities.

“Suicide prevention is about connection. By listening, reaching out, and showing empathy, we can all play a role in supporting people through their darkest moments."

Fabiola Case, SEMPHN's Suicide Prevention Senior Program Officer.
