Supporting LGBTQI+ communities through inclusive, evidence-based alcohol and other drug care.

Rainbow Recovery is an LGBTQI+ specific alcohol and other drug (AOD) program delivered by Thorne Harbour Health, in partnership with Windana, across the SEMPHN catchment. The program provides culturally safe, affirmative care tailored to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ clients, with integrated support across counselling, case management, and referrals to broader health and social services.

  • Where is this service provided?

Across the South Eastern Melbourne PHN (SEMPHN) catchment.

  • Who is eligible?

LGBTQI+ people seeking alcohol and other drug support who may also require assistance with co-occurring mental health or psychosocial needs.

  • What support is provided?

    • Brief interventions
    • Counselling
    • Intensive case management
    • Non-residential withdrawal support
    • Dual diagnosis outreach
    • Linkages to social, primary, and mental health services for wraparound care
  • Why is this program needed?

LGBTQI+ people experience higher rates of substance use disorders, trauma, and co-occurring mental health diagnoses compared to the general population. Stigma, discrimination, and a lack of culturally safe care options contribute to poorer treatment access and outcomes in mainstream AOD services. Rainbow Recovery addresses this gap with tailored, affirmative care.
