There is no specific vaccine available for bird flu. The seasonal flu (human influenza) vaccine can reduce the risk of being infected of both influenza and bird flu strains at the same time.

Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended for poultry workers, people who work with birds and other animals and people travelling overseas to countries that have bird flu.

Healthcare professionals should consider bird flu in patients who present with influenza-like illness AND who have had contact with sick or dead birds or animals in the 10 days before the onset of symptoms. Medical practitioners and pathology services must notify any suspected or confirmed cases immediately to the department of health by calling 1300 651 160 (24/7) and connecting to the relevant Local Public Health Unit.
