July 31, 2025

New data and insights to inform health service planning for south east Melbourne are now available in the latest South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN) health needs assessment.

The latest assessment shows the south east Melbourne population is expected to grow to two million people by 2030, with the local government area (LGA) of Casey expected to be home to nearly half a million residents by that year.

It also provides insight into how certain demographics are distributed across the LGAs. Families with children under 15 years are most common in Casey and Cardinia, and couples without children are most common in Port Phillip, Stonnington, and Mornington Peninsula. And while Mornington Peninsula, Bayside and Kingston currently have the highest proportion of residents over the age of 65, projections indicate this will significantly shift, with the LGAs of Casey, Cardinia and Port Phillip to lead by 2030..

The assessment is our annual snapshot of the south east Melbourne community’s health, an in-depth report that draws from more than 100 sources of population, health and service usage data. Looking at the community’s current and projected health needs, and consulting closely with local stakeholders to further understand the stories behind the data, helps us identify opportunities to improve how care is delivered within the community.

We use the health needs assessment and our consultation to make evidence-informed decisions on how and where we invest our funds and resources so we can make the biggest impact. This ensures we are commissioning services, designing programs and building workforce capacity and capabilities in areas that support the people of south east Melbourne to live their healthiest lives.
