New service offers a tailored approach to AOD treatment for LGBTIQA+ people

February 17, 2023

SEMPHN is pleased to announce that Thorne Harbour Health in partnership with Taskforce will deliver a new LGBTIQA+ specific alcohol and other drug treatment (AOD) service in St Kilda, Frankston and Dandenong.

Many people are aware of the social, cultural and historical factors which contribute to substance misuse within marginalised communities.

Over the past few years, SEMPHN has listened to community members with lived experience and service providers with regard to alcohol and other drug treatment services. We continue to ask ‘what is and isn’t working?’ in the sector and how we can best respond.

It’s clear from these conversations that there’s a need for a service specifically tailored to the needs of people who identify as LGBTIQA+. Our Needs Assessment insights and evidence tell us that LGBTIQA+ people are less likely to seek help or treatment for fear of discrimination, stigma or other pressures and that a large proportion would prefer to use LGBTIQA+ specific services. The service has been commissioned in response to this need.

The service will offer:

  • Early intervention targeting less problematic drug use, including brief intervention
  • Individual and family counselling
  • Withdrawal management with pathways to support and relapse prevention
  • Linkages to other services like day-stay rehabilitation, intensive non-residential programs, post-rehabilitation support, after care support and relapse prevention
  • Case management, care planning and coordination
  • Improved access and pathways to AOD services

This service will be available soon in St Kilda, Frankston and Dandenong (though is open to all LGBTIQA+ people with an AOD concern, living or working in south east Melbourne). Referrals will be accepted via Thorne Harbour Health.
