[Closed] Provide combined treatment for mental illness and substance misuse disorders

November 2, 2022

SEMPHN is excited to invite services to deliver an Integrated Co-Occurring Treatment Service Pilot in one or more of the following Local Government Areas (LGAs): Casey, Cardinia, and/or the Mornington Peninsula.

Through our recent AOD consultations with consumers and service providers, there was overwhelming support for the commissioning of more services that can treat co-morbidities and simplify service access for consumers.

It's estimated that 75% of people with a substance use disorder also have a mental health condition. Substance use disorders and mental health issues often occur together. For many people, other chronic diseases frequently co-exist as well. Typically, mental health and substance use disorders are treated through separate services or programs, increasing the burden for someone seeking treatment.

About the service

Participants of the service will receive combined treatment for substance use disorders and mental illnesses from the same practitioner or treatment team.

The service will prioritise clients who match all of the following criteria:

  • live, work, or study in South Eastern Melbourne
  • have been diagnosed with a co-occurring substance use disorder and moderate-to-severe mental health condition
  • may not otherwise be able to access treatment
  • experience other cultural or social challenges.

Additionally, the service will prioritise partnering with existing established services such as the SEMPHN-funded Mental Health Integrated Complex Care (MHICC) and Accessible Psychological Intervention (API) programs or other community health services.

The service must be based in one or more of the following LGAs:

  • City of Casey
  • Cardinia Shire
  • Shire of Mornington Peninsula.
