Share your experience of a heart condition to inform a new Victorian pilot project

July 3, 2023

Do you live or work in south east Melbourne?

Do you have personal experience navigating the public health system (community-based and/or hospital) with a heart condition?

You could be a Health Consumer Advisor for a Victorian pilot project!

The Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI; as a division of the Victorian Department of Health) and South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN) are collaborating on a data linkage pilot project, focused on cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes. CVD is a major cause of illness and death in Australia and treating people with CVD in hospital is more costly than treating them in the community. Integrated care across the primary care and hospital sectors is crucial to ensure timely prevention of CVD hospitalisations. Comprehensive, joined-up primary care and hospital data are important in understanding patient pathways through the health system. There is currently an absence of this data in Victoria!

We’re seeking a Health Consumer Advisor to join the project’s Steering Committee.

What will I do as a Health Consumer Advisor on the Steering Committee?

As a Health Consumer Advisor, we value your personal experience with a heart condition and will ask you to:

  • Share your thoughts on how data will benefit consumers
  • Provide consumer-focused advice for system improvement
  • Share your personal experiences with the health system
  • Contribute insights to shape project goals and improvement strategies.

All members will be expected to contribute positively and engage effectively with stakeholders, as guided by the Chair.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Health Consumer Advisor role you need to:

  • Be aged 18+ years old
  • Live in south east Melbourne
  • Have had, or still have, a heart condition
  • Have experience with the community system (ie; primary health care) and/or public hospital system

What commitment is involved?

More details about the role requirements are explained below.

Time commitment: We kindly request a minimum commitment of one (1) year. The Steering Committee meets three to four (3-4) times per year, with each meeting lasting no more than two (2) hours. The first meeting is likely to be in August 2023.

Meeting location: Meetings will be via video conference, or in person (Melbourne area) with members' agreement.

Payment: You will receive $237 per meeting attendance.

Support: A designated contact person from VAHI will provide support throughout your engagement.
