It's Men's Health Week!

June 9, 2024

Men's Health Week (10 - 16 June) is here, and this year the focus is on Men's Health Checks.

It's a perfect time to highlight how health professionals can support the well being of men and boys. Here are some key services and resources to promote among your male patients.

The Men’s Table

The Men’s Table is a national organisation that started in 2011 when twelve men gathered for a chat and a bite to eat. Co-founder Ben Hughes, going through a tough divorce and business struggles, found immense benefit in the judgment-free, honest conversations. Recognising the value, Ben and co-founder David Pointon decided in 2019 to share this formula with others: a cheap meal, once a month, at the same place and time with the same group of men.

Today, Men’s Tables are hosted in local communities across Australia, significantly impacting men’s lives. Each table provides a safe, non-judgmental space focused on connection and belonging. New members are introduced through a creatively named "Entrée," which explains the monthly meeting structure. Members also have access to LivingWorks ASIST suicide prevention training, enhancing their ability to recognise and respond to suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

In the south-east, there are currently Men’s Table groups in Frankston and Port Melbourne. One participant shared,

“The table offers social connections, friendships, and deep sharing in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. It’s inclusive, and I look forward to our meetings.”

Bowel Cancer Screening

Another important initiative is the newly reduced bowel cancer screening age limits. Promoting this screening can be life-saving for many men. The free screening kits can be discreetly ordered and performed at home.

Starting July 1, 2024, individuals aged 45 to 49 can request their first free kit and join the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program:

  • Eligible people aged 45 to 49 can request their first bowel screening kit to be mailed to them.
  • Eligible people aged 50 to 74 will continue to receive a bowel screening kit in the mail every two years.

Free Bowel Screening Kits can be ordered from www.ncsr.gov.au/boweltest.
