[Closed] Join the 3-month project to maximise local cancer screening

Sep 05, 2022

SEMPHN is offering ten General Practices the opportunity to take part in a three month Maximising Cancer Screening Quality Improvement project.

This project is offered in two phases. The first round commences on the Monday, 19 September 2022 and the second begins on Monday, 16 January 2023.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on cancer screening

Since the pandemic, we have seen a 10% reduction in cancer screening which is resulting in late diagnoses.

  • It is predicted that diagnosed cancers will increase by 50% within the next 15 years
  • People identifying as Indigenous are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer
  • It is predicted that 25% of women and 33% of men will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 75.

Make a difference, get involved

SEMPHN aims to decrease these alarming statistics. We aim to decrease these numbers by encouraging practices to get involved in a Quality Improvement project.

Participating practices will choose to screen for liver, breast, bowel or cervical cancer.

SEMPHN would like to see applications across our catchment, particularly Casey, Cardinia, Frankston and Greater Dandenong due to high mortality rates.

Benefits of participating:

  • $12,500 to support the practice
  • Increasing the number of patients screened for cancer, enabling early intervention and improves survival rates
  • Education workshops that fulfil CPD points
  • Individualised support and guidance for developing monthly PDSAs
  • Fulfil your PIP QI accreditation requirements.

Who should apply?

Practices who see the following patient cohorts should consider applying:

  • Patients who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Patients from CALD backgrounds
  • A high number of patients who have never been screened for cervical cancer
  • A high number of patients aged between 50 to 74
  • Patients who are at risk of contracting Hepatitis B or C
