Talking all things Breast Health with Dandenong & District Aborigines Co-Operative Limited (DDACL)

November 2, 2023

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DDACL recently hosted a First Nations cancer screening awareness event at Nairm Marr Djambana Gathering Place to discuss breast health, early detection and prevention.

SEMPHN’s 2022-2025 Annual Needs Assessment identified low numbers of cancer screening participation among local First Nations peoples.

As part of the First Nations Cancer Screening Program, DDACL strives to increase cancer screening among First Nations peoples in the local government areas (LGA) of Greater Dandenong, Mornington Peninsula, Casey, Cardinia, and Frankston by:

  • Increasing awareness and understanding among community members
  • Promoting the program among general practices as a referral pathway
  • Providing practical support for community members to attend cancer screening appointments

The event provided valuable information tailored to First Nations women, including presentations from Breast Screen Victoria, Bunurong Health Service and two women from the Community sharing their own personal experiences.

Presenters also showcased The Beautiful Shawl Project, a collaboration between Breast Screen Victoria, the Victoria Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) plus eight Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) across the state.

Working with local community artists to produce customised screening shawls, the project partners provided First Nations woman with a culturally appropriate, familiar and beautiful garment to wear during screening, and to keep afterwards.

Thank you to everyone involved in hosting such an insightful event and to the wonderful speakers for sharing your powerful and inspiring stories.
